15.07.2024, The world of sky disks

The exhibition banner combines the ancient connection between astronomy, seafaring and early voyages of discovery. All topics are presented in the Pfännerhall and culminated in the ABORA IV expedition of 2019.

The exhibition also looks at the mining aspects. The creators of the sky disk belonged to the oldest bronze culture north of the Alps. It is known as the Aunjetitz culture (ca. 2,300-1,600 BC). Despite the sky disk's huge popularity, the Aunjetitz culture is almost unknown to the German population. The picture shows the creation of large diagrams that are intended to take visitors back to the world of those early miners.

The master painter Günter Eckhardt led the work on the large displays. Unfortunately, Günter died shortly after the completion of our knowledge exhibition at the end of 2022.

All painters and sponsors of the special exhibition in Braunsbedra. They also all belong to the Association for Experimental Archaeology and Research Chemnitz e.V., which has been presenting its research results in the Pfännerhall since 2018.

In the Pfännerhall central workshop in Braunsbedra on Lake Geiseltal, an exhibition has been installed that is unique in Europe. It shows disc-shaped objects that reflect navigational and astronomical knowledge from prehistoric times. These sky disks have been found on almost every continent on earth and complement the picture we got from the Nebra sky disk.

Showing the sky disks of the world in their entirety is an impossible task. There are too many disc objects on every continent and across different eras. The early artists used many different materials to depict their cult motifs. It was not just bronze or gold, but also ceramics or stone.

Many of these objects still puzzle archaeologists. Be it the shape or the mystical imagery of the disks. This picture panel is intended to provide an insight and give some basic explanations for the disks, which are also shown on the world map.

The focus of the exhibition is of course the Nebra Sky Disk. In contrast to the interpretations of the State Office for Archaeology/Saxony-Anhalt, its image content was researched using the work-immanent observation method and new astronomical findings. These approaches come to very different conclusions, which show how advanced the Bronze Age makers of the disk were in astronomical observations.

We invite you to come to the Pfännerhall and let yourself be enchanted by the unique heritage of our Central European cultural landscape in several exhibitions. It is always open from Wednesday to Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
