The name ABORA refers to an interdisciplinary research project by Dr. Dominique Görlitz that deals with the legacy of human civilizations. Görlitz became known primarily for his ABORA reed boat expeditions across the Mediterranean and the North Atlantic.
Dominique Görlitz believes that humanity's innovative potential was greater in ancient times than is generally assumed today. He considers it an essential task of classical studies to find out what mechanisms led to the rise, flourishing, and ultimately the decadence and decline of cultures.
This philosophical consideration—that our modern society can learn a great deal from the cultural history and cultural “collapses” of earlier societies—is the main motivation behind his ABORA experiments as part of a long-term scientific program.
