A new DILMUN?
Even the best-designed DILMUN does not last forever. The DILMUN S, which has been at the heart of our training and test voyages for many years, will certainly continue to give us many valuable nautical miles. However, like any organic material, its wooden internal skeleton is subject to the natural aging process. At some point, the point will be reached where transport, launching, and strong wind loads are no longer possible without risk. Then not only will a boat come to an end, but also a chapter of intensive shared learning experiences.
As the management team, we are already thinking about how this moment can be shaped. Will a DILMUN S2 be created as an advanced functional replica? Or will we consciously return to our roots and build another classic reed boat in order to preserve the immediate experience with this perishable material? A decision is not yet necessary – and perhaps not yet sensible. The only thing that is certain is that the day will come when we will long for a new DILMUN ship. Not out of nostalgia, but out of the realization that continuous learning, sailing together, and experiencing early seafaring should not be limited exclusively to large expeditions.
