We Are Not Looking for Myths – We Are Looking for Measurable Answers

We do not want to answer archaeological mysteries with speculation, but with scientific data. Support Dr. Dominique Görlitz and the ABORA Team in carrying out new scientific investigations of pyramid-like structures, rock art, and evidence of early cultural contacts in Cuba, the Azores, Tenerife, and Morocco.

At the heart of these projects are modern Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) dating methods – techniques that can help determine when sediments or rock surfaces were last exposed to sunlight. These methods may allow us to establish more precise chronological frameworks for construction phases, rock art, and other archaeological remains.

For many years, Dr. Dominique Görlitz and the ABORA Research Expeditions have investigated unresolved questions concerning early seafaring, forgotten cultural contacts, and enigmatic monumental structures.
Now we are preparing for another decisive step: at several extraordinary archaeological sites, we plan to collect scientific samples, have them analysed by specialized laboratories, and document the entire research process on film.

The central question is:

Could some pyramid-like structures and rock art sites in the Atlantic region
be significantly older than previously assumed?

At one pyramid site on Tenerife already investigated using OSL dating, samples have produced dates extending back into the first half of the 3rd millennium BC. Findings like these demonstrate why further scientific investigations are so important.

Planned Research Projects

Pico / Azores – New OSL Dating

In mid-November 2026, we plan to collect additional OSL samples on the island of Pico.

The Azores are particularly important for investigating the possibility of early contacts across the Atlantic and for establishing a more reliable chronology of the islands‘ archaeological structures.

Estimated funding required: €10,000–15,000

Cuba – Unique Cave and Rock Art

In early December 2026 or January 2027, extraordinary cave paintings and rock art sites in Cuba are scheduled to be documented and scientifically investigated.

Our goal is to establish a better understanding of when these images were created and to explore their possible cultural context.

Estimated funding required: approximately €20,000

Morocco – Expedition into the Atlas Mountains

During a one-week research expedition into the Atlas Mountains, we plan to investigate evidence associated with the historical use of tobacco.

Among the analytical methods to be employed is gas chromatography.

Estimated funding required: €8,000–10,000

Professional Film Documentation

We do not want this research to disappear into laboratory reports and archives. We want the scientific process and its results to be transparent and accessible to the public.

For this reason, the expeditions and investigations will be professionally documented on film. Camera equipment, technical support, editing, and post-production are expected to require an additional budget of approximately €20,000.

Why Is
This Research Important?

Because archaeological questions cannot be decided by opinion.

The answers must come from verifiable scientific evidence.

This principle lies at the heart of the ABORA research program. Every new investigation answers some questions while raising new ones. We may only be at the beginning of a scientific reassessment of the prehistory of the Canary Islands and the wider Atlantic region.

New OSL techniques may also provide an opportunity to establish more reliable dates for rock art.

One particularly promising approach is OSL surface-exposure dating, which can be applied directly to exposed rock surfaces. This could open new possibilities for determining when petroglyph surfaces were last exposed or modified and for placing rock art within a more reliable chronological framework.
